Important polychrome court painting on paper, the scene painted in the style of the school of Jesuit painters who practiced in China between the 17th and 18th centuries, such as Castiglione and Attiret.
Depicting a palace scene, possibly the Summer Palace based on the shape of the balustrades, the group of figures includes an elderly main figure with features reminiscent of portraits of princes or emperors from the late 17th to 18th centuries, three dark-skinned figures preparing offerings for him, including a zither, a planter containing a bonsai and the third preparing a perfume burner with the help of a steward.
Note the painted furniture, particularly the table and armchair near the main character, in a style typical of the early 18th century.
