Simone Gouze,
Period newspapers reveal that she was the first European to live in the land of the lolos, and traveled to several Asian cities. Throughout her life, her work, often in pastel, was inspired by her own experiences and, above all, by the objects and people she met on her travels. Hungry for the unknown, for lands and faces, she traveled for at least five years to China, Vietnam and Cambodia, where she became fascinated by the way of life of these populations.
In 1933, she organized a pastel exhibition entitled “Visages d’Asie” at the Foyer du Théâtre in Saigon (see visual 1). Each work we present today tells a story, a discovery, an encounter.
