A small six-leaf folding screen, each leaf illustrating five registers of banners and standards (sashimono, uma-jirushi, hata-jirushi) used as distinctive signs by armies and commanders in battle, either worn on the back by infantrymen (smaller) or by army commanders (larger).
Most bear the symbols (kamon) of the clans represented.
On the paintings on the screen, each banner is identified by an inscription.
On the side, an inscription on paper stuck to the upright gives the title:
Jidai daimyô hata-jirushi zu, “Representations of ancient daimyô banners”.
Total sheet size: 106 x 46.5 cm.
Size of painted part: 70 x 35.7 cm
Leaves separated, wear, tears, traces of damp, hinges damaged.
nb. A 14-m-long painted scroll illustrating the same theme, no. 7 of a set, dated late 17th century, was exhibited at the Musée Guimet during the exhibition “Daimyo, Seigneurs de la guerre au Japon”, Paris, February 16-May 13, 2018, catalog no. 14, pp. 206-207.
